This splendid city, full of monuments, was founded by the Etruscan people, who gave her the name “Felsinea” that was subsequently changed under the Galls to “Bononia”, from which the current name of Bologna derives.
The city is famous the world over for her university, Europe’s oldest, which dates back to the 12th century. In addition to a great number of museums the city also boasts a famous Civic Art Gallery. The city centre has a unique architectural feature in the portici, or covered galleries. The 20 km of portici make it possible to visit the city’s main historical buildings in almost all weather conditions without resorting to the use of an umbrella.
Towers played an important part in the past of Bologna, once also known as the “towered city”, due to the great number of towers that populated it. However, over time, conflicts and historical events took their toll and many were destroyed, leaving two main ones: the Asinelli Tower and the Garisenda Tower, which have now become a symbol of the city.
Bolognese cuisine is a fundamental experience for any visitor, having been a proud tradition throughout the city’s history and to date Bologna still disputes the origin of a number of famous recipes with other nearby cities.
“Tortellini” (small squares of fresh pasta with a meat filling, folded to achieve a characteristic belly-button appearance) and “lasagne” (layers of fresh pastaalternated with layers of a meat-based filling) are considered the essence of Bolognese cuisine, alongside “mortadella” (a cold pork sausage made according to a time-honoured recipe) that accompanies hors d’oeuvres, lending an unparalleled.
Situated in northern Italy, to the south-east of the Padania plateau, Bologna is easily accessible from both north and south, by virtue of its RAILWAY STATION that makes it a compulsory transit point for trains travelling from northern to southern Italy and vice versa.
The city’s modern airport, currently undergoing expansion work, with international flights from almost all Europe’s cities, makes it an irreplaceable departure and arrival point for nearby cities.
